Day 5 Prompt: Write a Letter

Wow, what a week! Thanks for following along with the Writing Rules Mini Project and getting creative with me!

Now, for today’s prompt.

Prompt:

This week I’ve been encouraging you to use creative writing as a distraction from what’s going on in the world. It’s good to have a creative escape, but sometimes it’s best to use writing as a way of connecting with reality. So, today we’re going to write letters. Whether you want to brighten someone’s day, make a meaningful relationship tangible, or simply express how you’re feeling, a letter is a great way to start good conversations.

Here’s a list of people who are probably open to receiving letters:

  • your grandparents
  • your best friend
  • a friend you haven’t seen in a long time
  • a loved one you miss
  • a healthcare worker
  • a parent
  • a student learning from home
  • a teacher teaching from home
  • a friend you know is really stressed
  • a friend you know is really lonely

The list goes on and on. I’m sure you can think of a few people who would want a letter. Start with one. Ask questions. Tell stories. Share things that make you happy or things you’re worried about. And then seal it up and send it off. You might just find a new pen pal to keep you sane during this crazy time!

Tips:

If you’ve been following along this whole week, you can send some of your other creative work along with your letter. Boom, your first reader!

If writing to someone else is too daunting, turn this prompt around and write a letter to your past or future self. Or write a fictional letter. Or write an open letter. The choices are endless!

If possible, write your letter by hand. There’s something about the tangible pen and paper that makes your words feel all the more real. (But if it feels more practical or safer to use email, do that, by all means.)

Daily Definition:

Salutation – the greeting at the beginning of a letter, usually something like Dear ____ or Hello, ____.

And that’s all she wrote! Again, thanks for following along this week. I’ll post my own open letter over on the Creative page later today.

Today I’m also celebrating 100 daily writing prompts! (It’s the little things, right?) If you’re in the mood for more writing prompts, I plan to keep posting them everyday on this page and on my Instagram @kamryn.heidi !
