Day 1 Prompt: Let Music Inspire a Story

Hello and welcome to my five-day creative writing prompt series, the Writing Rules Mini Project! I don’t know about you, but I’ve already got the quarantine blues. With Easter just around the corner, I think a lot of us are feeling especially isolated this week. Writing has always been an escape for me, but lately, I just haven’t felt motivated. Anyone else?

That’s why I wanted to kick-start my creativity with the Writing Rules Mini Project! Creative writing can be a great distraction from the problems of the real world, even for just 15 minutes. This week, I wanted to spread the writing bug and give you some fun prompts and activities to get your imagination whirling!

I created these prompts to be family friendly, so please share with creative writers of all ages! It’s a good way to take a break from all the screen time we’ve been having lately.

Prompt:

So, without further ado, here is today’s prompt: pick an instrumental song (no words), maybe from a movie soundtrack. Listen to it and imagine a scene that could be happening while the music is playing. When the song is over, the clock is ticking – you have 15 minutes to write that story!

Tips:

Pick a soundtrack to a movie you haven’t seen. And don’t think about the movie while you’re listening—create a whole new story in your head!

Make it a family or group activity if you can—have everyone listen to the music, and then share your stories after the 15 minutes are up. You might be surprised to hear how the same song can inspire different people!

Need some characters to help you get started? Here are a few: a clever pirate, a firefighter, or a lost explorer!

Daily Definition:

Flash Fiction – a short story usually under 1000 words, or about one sheet of notebook paper.

A flash fiction piece should still have a beginning, middle, and end. It should still have characters and conflict. In other words, it should still have everything a book does, only squished down into a page or two. Your project from today’s activity will probably be around this length.

Check the Creative page later today to see what I wrote for today’s prompt. And don’t forget to follow along on Instagram – @kamryn.heidi – for some song ideas and extras every day!
